2 Day West Coast Explorer

The west coast of South Africa is vastly different from anywhere else. A wild stretch lashed by the icy Atlantic and backed by rolling dunes covered in coastal fynbos. We discover the West Coast national park which with its impressive diversity remains unmatched. The 30 000ha reserve protects the rich marine life in the lagoon and rare coastal wetlands with the main attractions being its prolific birdlife and excellent variety of wild flowers. Discover an archaeological phenomenon and play Indiana Jones while you dig for ancient artifacts at the West Coast Fossil Park. Engage with the most, studied, researched and filmed indigenous group of people on earth, the San, at their home in the heart of the West Coast.

Day 1
West Coast National Park
We depart Cape Town for the West Coast National Park.
On arrival we meet our specialist guide and honorary ranger who will delight us with an in-depth look at the ecology, marine, bird and plant life of the reserve.
After lunch, we take a walk to a bird-hide at the Langeberg lagoon’s edge. Alternatively take a boat trip to one of the reserves islands or around the wide expanse of sparkling turquoise water.
Dinner is a local style barbeque under the starry African sky.
We spend the night inside this spectacular natural haven on a house boat or refurbished local fishing cottages.

Day 2
Fossils and San Culture
Step 5million years into the West Coasts past with an informative talk and explanation of this amazing excavation site. Play Indiana Jones by digging for and dusting ancient fossils.
Under the aegis of the South African Museum, it has been established that this deposit contains the greatest diversity of 5 million year old fossils in the world. These fossils have attracted the interest of leading overseas scientists, together with local researchers to analyze our past.

We then take a short drive to !Khw attu a local NGO where we will meet and engage with traditional San people, do some game viewing on a tractor ride through the reserve and enjoy a fantastic traditional meal overlooking the !Khwa ttu reserve with Table Mountain in the distance from the boma, high up on the hill.

The !Khwa ttu experience is all about the San; a culture that dates back more than 40,000 years. The San are the indigenous – or ‘first people’ of Southern Africa.  Scattered communities across SA became the most studied, researched and filmed indigenous group throughout the world.
