The Whale Coast – Hermanus |
- The whale coast is an exhilarating stretch of coast where the mountains plunge straight into the ocean forming a coastline of steep cliffs, sandy coves, dangerous headlands and natural harbours.
- Enjoy great aerial views of the passing beaches and bays with the Helderberg Mountains as our backdrop.
- Visit Stoney point penguin colony one of two breeding penguin colonies in SA and only breeding ground of the African penguin in the world.
- The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens is our next stop where we take a gentle walk to Disa kloof with its dam and waterfall. The gardens are home to the rare red Disa and rare Protea canary.
- We arrive in Hermanus, the self proclaimed, “world’s best land based whale watching site,” and it does indeed host impressive numbers during breeding and calving season.
- Take a whale safari and witness these gigantic yet graceful creatures up close, along with dolphin and other rich marine life. (Best between Jul to Nov)
- Alternatively the town of Gansbaai, which lies a few kilometers from Hermanus is the world’s shark capital, where you can cage dive with great whites if you dare!
